Meet our Coaches

Donnie CowartDonnie Cowart
Donnie, a native of Rustburg, VA, is a 2009 graduate of VMI, where he holds the school record in the indoor mile and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Competing in both cross-country and track, Cowart capped his career at VMI with his 8:44.66 and Division I All-American finish in the steeplechase at the 2009 NCAA Championships.  Since graduation, Donnie has made eight USATF Outdoor Championship Finals, the 2012 & 2016 Olympic Trials Finals where he finished 4th & 8th respectively. In 2017 Donnie broke the 4-minute mile barrier running 3:58.43 for a full mile on the track.

Robyn Holland

Robyn Land McElwee
 Robyn has been running competitively for over 25 years.  She was a 4-time Western Regional champion and 2-time NC State champion in Cross Country and the 2-mile.  She is a graduate of Virginia Tech where she specialized in the 5000 and 10,000-meter events.  Robyn co-authored My Trainer Fitness for Kids, and has coached many high school runners to Division 1 scholarships.  She is a USATF certified coach, and the founder of Crazy Running.

Avery Martin
I recently graduated from VMI this December and have been training in Winston-Salem with Donnie. I set the school record for the 1000 meter run at VMI, and specialized in middle distance races. I was an 11 time IC4A championship qualifier in six events, and won the outdoor Southern Conference 800 meter championship in 2016. I'm big into reading, and my favorite book is The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway.

Bill Gibbs

Bill Gibbs @ Whitaker Elementary & Arts Based
 Coach Bill Gibbs has been running for 20 years. He is a dedicated, hard-working athlete. He has completed 19 marathons, and has run in the Twin City Track Club's Ultimate Runner for 20 years in a row! In addition to running, likes to lift weights and enjoys all aspects of fitness and promoting healthy lifestyles. Bill has been an active member and leader in the Twin City Track Club for many years. He is co-owner/ operator of Ultimate Race Management, and can be found most weekends at road races around the triad. He can manage timing an event, racing often, and cheering on all the racers! Coach Bill leads our Whitaker Crazy Running group, and often coaches our Sunday afternoon Family Training group.

Fun Fact: Bill enjoys coaching and loves to motivate people to get the most out of themselves!

Teresa Inman @ Whitaker Elementary
 Teresa lives in Winston-Salem with her husband, Lucas, and their three boys. She grew up in NC and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a Masters in Accounting. She now works part time as a self-employed CPA and volunteers her time through charitable organizations, such as the Junior League of Winston-Salem and the Whitaker Elementary School PTA. She runs a wide range of distances and enjoys the spectrum of experiences the sport of running offers: from the explosive power required in sprints, to the steady strength of the 5k, to the endurance and fatigue of a marathon.

Blake Young @ Summit School
 After living various places all over the country, Blake has moved back to Winston Salem, NC to pursue her Real Estate career. In her free time she enjoys running the Greenway with her dog, Otter, hiking, fishing, and camping. She is excited to start with Crazy Running and help the children reach their goals while having fun!

Caitlin Krol @ Hanes Park
 Caitlin is originally from San Diego, CA and was recruited to run for Wake Forest University, where she completed her undergraduate education as a Health and Exercise Science major. She is now a medical student at Wake Forest School of Medicine, and when she is not in the classroom or making rounds in the hospital, she spends her free time coaching the Junior and Senior Crazy Runners. Caitlin loves giving back to the Winston Salem community and promoting exercise and healthy habits in children, as she is not only a coach for Crazy Running, but also the co-coordinator of the Mudpies and Doctors program at a local daycare in Winston. As she continues to be a part of the Crazy Running family, she continually notices an incredible amount of growth not only in the children's physical abilities, but also in their self-esteem, confidence, and enjoyment of physical activity. She is now conducting a study with Wake Forest University looking at the "Impact of a Structured Running Program on Self-Perceptions and Enjoyment of Physical Activity." Caitlin's love for running and exercise started at an early age when she would run on the beaches of San Diego with her family and friends; and she has continued to find joy in many outdoor activities like running, hiking, and now coaching.

 Adaya Burden @ Lewisville Elementary 
 Adaya Burden is originally from Charlotte, NC. She is a junior, Exercise Physiology major at Winston Salem State University. In her free time, Adaya is usually taking fitness classes or creating her own work out regimens in the gym. Coach Adaya is very excited to train her Junior Crazy Runners for the upcoming Mistletoe Half Marathon. She also enjoys shopping, spending time with family and reading.

 Phillip Summers @ Hanes Park
 Phillip is a native North Carolinian who for the past 7 years has called Waughtown home. Hehas a BA in PE from UNC by the Sea and a Master in Public Health for the UNC. Phillip does research by day at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and enjoys running, bicycling and camping while off. He is the proud father of 3 runners and loves to encourage physical activity in everyone he meets

Passion Firms @ Calvary Day School Coach Passion Firms will be the head coach for the Junior Crazy Runners (Kindergarten - 2nd graders). Passion is a senior at WSSU, where she is studying Health and Exercise Science. She has great experience working with children, at her mother’s child care center. Passion is excited to share her passion for a healthy, active lifestyle with your children!
